Lexus RC 350
The Lexus RC 350 is quickly becoming high on our list of favorite coupes. Sure its powerful brother created the V8 F Sport RC engine even faster and almost focused on the race, but the F was much more expensive – at $ 74,000 – than the RC 350 Luxury. The $ 66,000 we just spent an exciting week.
Lexus RC is a purpose-designed two-door sports coupe, not a variant of a four-door vehicle like many of its high-end rivals. Therefore, it cuts compromises in style, body strength and suspension dynamics.
No one can accuse Lexus of being conservative these days
The fashionable big grille treatment is currently being taken to a new level by the designers at Lexus. It completely dominates the front, and the bottom edges look as if they want to go closer to the road than they did.
No one can accuse Lexus of being conservative these days – a deliberate decision made when Akio Toyoda, the grandson of Toyota’s founder, assumed the presidency of Lexus and Toyota in 2009.
The luxurious body of the Lexus RC 350 is neatly configured, the bold rear section, with large integrated spoiler, side air intake and deep diffuser.
Inside, large circular tools are placed in a large container. Although the screen looks similar, it is actually electronic and in some models it may vary depending on the driver’s wishes and the selected driving mode. The sporty design is finished with quality materials, with lots of signals to the very expensive Lexus LFA supercar.
The 7.0 inch multimedia screen is well shaded (handy on bright Queensland days in our home area) and easy to read. The functions on the screen are operated by the touchpad between the front seats. Although we have fewer visits than those currently used in other Lexus models, this system ranks low on our screen availability list.
RC Luxury gives access to satellite navigation, 10-speaker audio including DAB broadcasts and reversing cameras. It has advanced Bluetooth, AUX and USB inputs.
Engine / Transmission
Power comes from one of our favorite engines – the 3.5-liter engine from Lexus / Toyota. For added sportiness, it has been tuned to increase its output to 233kW, with torque of 378Nm at 4800 rpm. That may seem high by the standard of a convertible, but keep in mind this is a full sport car and the ‘real’ drivers are happy to have a needle on the dial. In any case, there is a grumble of approximately 2000 turns or more.
The V6 sits in front of an eight-speed automatic transmission and drives the rear wheels. The automatic return gives it dramatic changes that heavily target the reaction and dynamic feel required by the typical owner.
With an impressive range of active and passive technology, not all standards on every model (check with your dealer), the Lexus RC Series will do everything it can to avoid trouble. and protect you if it happens. The RC has eight airbags, an impressive figure for a two-door coupe and seems to be able to achieve a strong rating when Australia’s NCAP test is done.
This is a real sports coupe guaranteed to bring a smile to the face
The front seats are supported without being aggressive enough to cause a nuisance in everyday driving. The back seat is designed for regular use, but we’ve found it worse when it comes to head and leg space. A simple one-touch lever helps the front seats quickly forward so that rear access is not too difficult.
This is a real sports coupe guaranteed to bring a smile to the face. Choose Sport mode and the two cam V6 engine produces great sound as well as instant throttle response. Give us a naturally tuned naturally aspirated engine in front of a very tight turbo engine every day.
Steering is one of the best we’ve ever had thanks to the excellent tuning and the use of rear-wheel drive. Therefore, leaving the front wheels to do nothing but steer, instead of being compromised by driving needs as well. Comments and feedback are in place.
Interestingly, we like the feel of the RC 350 Luxury, the cheaper model. The F Sport and Sport Luxury models have a different steering system, including some rear steering, which doesn’t feel quite good when driving on a daily basis.
The boot volume is great for a sports coupe and the backrest for the rear seats can be folded forward in a 60/40 ratio to allow you to arrange luggage / space.
