Lexus RX cars: 2003-2015
The Lexus RX has been a huge success for the Japanese premium brand since its launch in Australia in April 2003. Adding a scooter that is taller than 4WD, it is capable of off-road light to medium. Average in its AWD versions, although few owners have its advantages.
The introduction of the fourth generation RX line in November 2015 generated a lot of interest and many owners traded up to one. Therefore, creating a fever on old cars taking up too much space in used car lots. If you are quick, you can choose one of these for less than the regular price. No promises, though …
By the way, although this is the fourth generation of the RX, the first generation is only sold in the US.
Since the fourth generation is still too new to comment on this used car, we won’t mention it here, other than saying it has a longer wheelbase than the third series so Legroom is better at the rear than previous models.
Lexus is famous for its sophistication and smooth running, smooth running. Premium materials and quality of internal fit and finish are good from the beginning, but have reached a higher level in subsequent models.
The inner room is good for two adults and three children in the first RXs sold here, but the next model is significantly better and the two adults in the back work nicely. Three children before age will fit comfortably.
We have heard no real complaints about the cost or availability of regular spares
Boot space is reasonable, but the stylish slope of the rear window means bulky objects often don’t fit. The rear seats have a 40/20 / 40 split to improve the problem.
The third-generation Lexus RX was introduced in February 2009 and is almost entirely new. It received a modest facelift in July 2012. For the first time it introduced four-cylinder engines as well as 2WD (front wheels).
Most Lexus RX cars are equipped with dual cam dual petrol engines, with a capacity of 3.0 liters in 330 and 3.5 liters in RX350. The engine is located next to a five-speed automatic transmission in two-car vehicles. The all-new 2009 model saw it lift to a six-speed unit.
Lexus has long been strong in the field of petrol-electric hybrid with all its models. The RX is certainly no exception and since October 2006, an electric motor has been offered in conjunction with gasoline. Look for the lowercase ‘h’ in the model name, e.g. Lexus RX400h. Note that it doesn’t have a 4.0-liter petrol engine, which is actually 3.3-liter, but Lexus calculates it with the performance of a 4.0-liter petrol engine.
Lexus dealers are mainly located in metropolitan areas of capital cities and major regional and national locations. If you need work done in other areas, some of Toyota’s top mechanics have been trained on Lexus’s work.
Service and repair costs are about average for an SUV in this premium class and we’ve heard no real complaints about the cost or availability of regular parts.
The premium doesn’t vary significantly between large companies, but it might be worth shopping around.
What are you looking for
High build quality means the troubles are abnormal, but these are complex machines and we recommend professional testing after you finish the original one again.
Looking for a smoking exhaust on a high fuel-efficient engine. It will be at its worst when the engine works hard.
Automatic gearbox testing is all but unnoticed in its actions unless you accelerate sharply.
Look inside and boot carefully because the RX is so popular among Mums’ cabs.
Physical damage indicates that light to moderate off-road use is most likely at corners, thresholds and door scratches.
