It looks like a daily delivery vehicle, but underneath it hides a high performance sports car.
The two guys outside the Lamborghini showroom cannot escape from the force field of the bright red Aventador.
It has a magnetic attraction, although their conversation is in a different direction.
“Yes, it was great, but …,” one said. “That’s why I named one of those new C63s,” the other replied. “Lambo will be useless as a family car. Great, but …”
He is right. Aventador is a poster car but it’s a practical, more realistic four-door Benz if you’re no longer single.
It can easily work for a modern family and, in difficult circumstances, will carry five adults for short trips. It also has the level and comfort that comes with the all-new C-Class.
The C63 is not cheap, from $ 154,510 as a sedan and $ 157,010 as a carriage, and it is very expensive for a midsize vehicle even if you buy it with the BMW M3 for $ 139,900 or one. Nissan GT-R at $ 172,000. But that’s a real bargain if you compare it to a top-class Porsche 911, or a Ferrari or even a $ 800,000 Aventador.
The latest C63 S is a good product as it is in the class, which means the M3 and Audi RS4, and a real pocket rocket. Roll the twin-turbo V8 engine into a throttle car, like the Tick test car, and it’s even better.
There is a lot to like about the new C63
Why so? Well, how many people expect a smooth white performance C-Class from Porsche, with a sprint speed of 4.1 seconds to 100km / h?
That’s what I like best about C63. It’s a stealth car that retains the practicality of a compact Benz, but has more classy and fast-moving classes.
C63 2015 now has a standard “S” package.
The extra letter in the badge means that every C63 S now comes with an additional punch that was previously only available in the “Performance Package”. When more than 80% of buyers tick the option of an extra cost, Mercedes-Benz Australia realized that they should make a deal – covering everything from 375kW and 700Nm to great Burmester engine mounts and 13-speaker audio. – Standard package.
So there’s a lot to like about the new C63. Even the black spray alloy wheels work better for me, after so much time in Benze, covering their silver wheels in an uncomfortable layer of black brake dust.
The all-new body and improved noise cancellation work well in the basic C200 which is very familiar and interesting and everything from the actual rear end to a simple, easy-to-use dash.
I’m still not a fan of tablet screens for multimedia systems, it seems to be solved instead of an integral part of the dash, but I know that this car will resist. Bigger screens and more apps in future models.
The C63 package comes with convertible sports exhaust, digital TV tuner, glass sunroof and Nappa leather.
To me, those are things like great LED headlights and instrumentation displays that really show what AMG can do, not just the power adapter.
But, of course, the turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 is a stonker. Those are not just numbers, but the way power comes to make it so good. It might be fun going to the shops, but once you even tick the throttle, it will accelerate with raw torque and follow it with top-class V8 engine and audio excitement.
The seven-speed automatic is gentle at the base, but if you control it manually, it’ll punch through the paddle shift.
But – and it’s hard to admit this is an astute driver – the car is best if you set the drive mode switch to Sport + and let the car worry about shifting in time and shifting. It lets you focus on braking and steering, knowing you’re getting the right gear – sometimes not what you think – all the time. It switches right down to the minimum cornering speed without upsetting the end.
It is a secretly licensed agent for suspense
Of course, the C63 has solid AMG suspension settings. But it’s not a collision car and it’s quite comfortable at highway speeds, despite having plenty of roar from 19-inch tires.
It also helps it to have a well-supported seat shape, although I find the rims on the leather-wrapped wheels too fat.
Of course, fuel economy can be rubbish if you drive hard. And the car can be noisy if you activate the sports exhaust near the house. But you expect all that. And a huge premium.
For me, the C63 always aims to drive a high performance sports car that can double as a conventional family car. The car, special. It’s a licensed undercover agent that’s thrilled, and even better today thanks to the excellence of the basic C-Class package.
