Review Haval H2 2018
The H2 is the smallest car produced by China’s largest SUV company, Haval, and it competes with cars like the Honda smell HR-V, Hyundai Kona and CX-3 from Mazda. Being Chinese, the H2 is more affordable than its rivals, but isn’t it just a good price?
For 15 years, the concept of me explained to you how to pronounce Haval and what it sounds cute and ridiculous like I’m doing the same for Hyundai now.
That’s how big brands can become in Australia. The company is owned by Great Wall Motors, China’s largest SUV maker, and anything big on China is really massive (have you seen their Wall yet?).
H2 is the smallest Haval SUV and competes with rivals like Honda, HR-V, Hyundai Kona and CX-3 of Mazda.
If you’ve done a bit of research, you’ll notice that H2 is more affordable than rivals, but isn’t it just a good price? Do you get what you pay for, and if so what are you getting, and what are you missing?
I drove a H2 Premium 4×2 to find out.
Oh, and you pronounce ‘Haval’ the same way you say ‘travel’. Now you know.
Does it represent good value for the price? What features does it come with? 6/10
At the time of writing H2 Premium 4×2 gasoline could cost less than $ 24,990, which means a $ 3,500 discount for the RRP, according to Haval.
Of course, you can read this in 2089, while surviving another nuclear winter in your impenetrable mountain compound, so it’s best to check out the Haval website to see is the offer still valid?
Ignoring the word ‘Premium’, because this 4×2 is the most affordable H2 you can buy and the $ 24,990 drive may sound incredible, but a quick glance reveals many small SUV rivals are also offer transactions.
The Honda HR-V VTi 2WD list is priced at $ 24,990, but can currently cost $ 26,990 driveway; The Toyota C-HR 2WD is $ 28,990 and $ 31,990 to drive, while the Hyundai Kona Active is listed for $ 24,500, or $ 26,990 to drive.
So, buy H2 Premium and you’ll save about $ 2000 compared to Kona or HR-V, which is an attractive prospect for families where every penny is worth.
The list of features also tick most typical boxes for the end of this segment. There is a 7.0 inch touch screen with reversing camera, four-speaker stereo, rear parking sensor, auto halogen headlights, HID LEDs, sunroof, auto wiper, air conditioning, cloth seats and 18 inch alloy wheels.
So on paper (or on the screen), H2 integrates well, but in reality, I find the quality of the features not as high as those in HR-V, Kona or C-HR.
You should know that the H2 display, though large, feels and looks cheap, and requires a few finger strokes to select items. The windshield wipers are too noisy, the indicators themselves do not ‘flicker’ as usual and the phone system is late when the connection is made, leading to me saying ‘hello’ but not heard at the other end of the line. This caused some controversy between my wife and me, and no car was worth it. Oh, and the sound of the stereo is great, but there’s a lighter.
Is there anything interesting about its design? 7/10
If you squint, the H2 looks a bit like a BMW SUV and that may be because BMW’s head of design, Pierre Leclercq, led the H2 style team (it’s worth pointing out that if you squint enough hard, I look like Robert Downey Jnr). Now he has moved to Kia but has left a handsome H2. I would even argue that the H2 is what the BMW X1 should look like, instead of a long, humpy nose.
The H2 was small, 4335mm long, 1814mm wide and 1695mm high, but it was bigger than almost all its rivals. Kona is 4165mm long, HR-V is 4294mm from start to finish and CX-3 is 4275. Only C-HR is longer at 4360mm.
Interior refinement may be better and it’s not on the same level as Japanese rivals. However, I like the cockpit design with its symmetry, the layout of the controls is also considered and accessible, the hood on the instrument cluster is great and I even like the opaque white case. like opal on dashboard border.
How realistic is the inner space? 7/10
300 liter H2 boot capacity is small compared to its rivals. The Honda HR-V has a starter engine of 437 liters, C-HR, is 377 liters and Kona, is 361 liters, but it has more luggage space than the CX-3, can only manage 264 liters.
