Review of Porsche Taycan 2020
This is usually the part where we bang in a little bit, trying to put the car into question into some kind of context before we are really stuck in the urgent question in hand – is it really good?
But we’ve been wasting time on all that here, so let me solve this problem a little faster for you: Porsche now has an electric car, Taycan is very fast and very smart. minh (that’s Thai-Khan, btw). And for a company built on a long history of common horsepower, it’s a huge deal.
Can Taycan conduct electricity for Porsche? Let’s find out.
Does it represent good value for the price? What features does it come with? 8/10
Currently there are only two Taycans, Turbo and Turbo S, with these games clearly referring to the trim levels and electrical power output than any conventional motor mechanics.
While the specifications are still locked in Australia – the car is still about 12 months since arriving locally – our international test cars have come with 21-inch alloys, sports seats, internal leather upholstery (with wood or carbon inserts, LED headlight matrix, dual-zone climate, standard navigation and Apple CarPlay.
The dial in the driver’s gearbox is replaced with a 16.8-inch curved screen, which can be viewed in “Classic”, “Map”, “Full map” or “Pure” modes, while the rev counter has been replaced by a Power meter.
You will find a 10.9-inch screen in the center of the dashboard, equipped with Apple CarPlay and can be hooked up to a third (mostly unnecessary) screen in front of passengers.
Taycan’s main control buttons have also been digitized, with an 8.4-inch touch panel below the dash house with climate control settings and “handwriting” input for the navigation system. And then, if you tick the four-zone climate option, there will be another touch panel for the rear-seat driver to control their own climate options.
So how much? Local pricing has not been confirmed, but we know that in the United States, Taycan Turbo starts at US $ 150,900, while Turbo S requires an investment of US $ 185,000.
We expect the Turbo to start above $ 200,000 and the Turbo S will push closer (or more) to $ 300,000.
Is there anything interesting about its design? 8/10
Like many of the larger members of the Porsche family, it talks about angles. Front or rear, it looks great, with tunnel-style headlights that seem to sprout from either side of the bonnet.
Even so, I think it missed something in the translation, and like it lost a bit of rate. Anyway, beauty and wisdom and all that. Let not live, right?
Praiseworthy, Taycan doesn’t look millions of years away from the Vision E concept revealed in 2015. The rear hinged back door is gone (Porsche says it must include a b-column for structural rigidity). , and once they do, the idea will be meaningless).
However, Taycan is a strong product and has a premium Porsche look, and one that doesn’t stray too far from the traditional playbook. In fact, charging the cover aside, you can hardly identify it as EV at all.
There is a continuous strip of light on the rear of the car, with the Porsche logo in glass lettering, and a host of active aerodynamic features, like the front lid and rear spoiler, previously cooling electrical equipment, like as well as the brakes.
Inside, however, the Taycan doesn’t move the German-brand interior game forward, in which it no longer looks like a cabin covered with glue and thrown into a deep cork barrel.
Instead, almost everything is digital, from the curved screen behind the steering wheel to the extra control screen – located below the multimedia screen in the center of the dashboard – and gives you access to install air conditioner and control volume.
The truth, though, is that while the abundance of this technology makes the interior feel a lot more modern, it doesn’t actually make it more user-friendly, with no compromises. Services that take milliseconds when using buttons or wheels take longer to attempt to access menus through a screen, some of which are real touchscreens while others provide feedback. tactile.
Add another point about the interior. The turbo we drove had a much more premium feel than the Turbo S, having changed the basic-looking gray trim later on to leather upholstery and carbon fiber components for the more expensive-looking wood. So be careful your Taycan, folks.
How realistic is the inner space? 7/10
First, let’s talk about dimensions, because that would help put the size of Taycan into some perspective. The first Porsche EV has a length of 4963mm, a width of 1966mm (excluding mirrors) and a height of about 1380mm – and weighs about 2.3 tons.
That makes it shorter, thinner and lower than the Panamera (5049mm / 1937mm / 1423mm) with Taycan technically falling into the C-Segment sedan class.
Like most rugged convertibles, how much space you get depends on where you are in the car, with the sloping roof eating into the space in the backseat. I am 175cm long, and the top of my head touches the roof lining. Porsche has created a clever trick in combining the “garage” between the battery pack and the rear electric motor, helping to create more space.
However, in the front, the cabin feels spacious, thanks to the taller roof and shoulder space between the passengers. Here, you’ll find two mugs, thin door pockets and vehicle connections hidden in a box separating the front seats.
There are two double USB ports below the back seat and the divider between the windows (this is a real four-seater car) filled with two cupholders and an attractive storage space.
The glove box, though tiny, has a 447-liter combined storage under the bonnet and trunk.
What are the important stats for engine and transmission? 9/10
Ah, now we have come to juicy stuff. There is no traditional / motor combination here, of course. Instead, Taycan provides vast quantities of electrical power on command.
There are two electric motors that are constantly excited at the games here, one that is located on each axis, although it can then be separated to allow Taycan to only run the engine in FWD to maximize range. .
These engines generate a combined capacity of 460kW in both Turbo and Turbo S, but you can unlock more power (in a 2.5-second explosion) when participating in launch control. Of course, how much energy depends on how much you spend
