On the road
The cheapest passat is my favorite. It is reasonably equipped, safe, comfortable, quiet and drives well.
But I started my time in a highline diesel engine, to see how it looked at the end of town.
All the basics are good, from a diesel engine with lots of kicks from the bottom and the driver’s adjustment response means I can spell in Eco or have fun in Sport. The rear screen is large and clear, the driver’s seat is as comfortable as promised with support and I like the clear instruments and leather-wrapped wheels.
But riding a car is fragile, with the car wriggling on broken surfaces and I’m not a fan of the sunroof that steals the space.
It was the ride that bothered me the most, because I knew this was a Golf-based Passat and the Golf Seven was one of the most interesting cars I knew.
Slipping into the base 132 makes me happier. The ride is compliant and well controlled, the corners are very good and it is also quiet and comfortable at cruising speeds on the freeway.
The base car has a lot of safety, with the promise of a 5-star ANCAP score, the petrol engine works well – but better in Sport mode – and I don’t lack a larger multimedia screen.
